Domestic wine production

According to provisional data from the IVV – Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (Vine and Wine Institute), wine production in the 2024/25 season reached 6.9 million hectoliters, down 8% from the previous season.

Of the 14 regions, it is worth noting the increase in volume recorded in the north and center-north regions, namely: Douro, Vinhos Verdes, Távora-Varosa, Beira Interior, Dão, and also in the Algarve. The other regions saw slight increases or slight decreases in production, with the exception of the Azores, which experienced a substantial decline.

As for the average annual growth from the 2020/21 campaign to 2024/25, nine of the 14 regions, namely Douro, Vinhos Verdes, Tejo, Beira Interior, Dão, Bairrada, Trás-os-Montes, Távora-Varosa, and Algarve, saw average growth in production. The regions of Távora-Varosa and Algarve showed the highest average growth during this period (above 12%).

World wine production

According to the latest data from the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine), in 2024 global wine production will be between 227-235 million hectoliters, the lowest since 1961.

The graph below illustrates global production trends since 2000. It shows that global wine production has remained stable, at around 260 million hectoliters for the fourth consecutive year, although there has been a downward trend in recent years.
