Domestic wine production
According to provisional data from the IVV – Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (Vine and Wine Institute), wine production in the 2025/26 season reached 5.9 million hectoliters, down 14% from the previous season.
Of the 14 regions, we had an increase only in Beira Interior and Açores. All the other regions had a decrease in volume.
When looking at the average annual growth from the 2021/22 to the 2025/26 wine years, it is clear that, of the 14 regions, only five – namely Vinhos Verdes, Beira Interior, Távora-Varosa, Algarve and the Azores – recorded an average increase in production. The regions of Távora-Varosa and the Azores showed the highest average growth during this period.

World wine production
According to the latest data from the OIV, global wine production in 2025 is estimated to be between 228 and 235 million hectolitres, with an average forecast of 232 million. This represents an increase of around 3% compared to the historically low level of 2024, but is still approximately 7% below the average for the last five years and will be the second lowest in the last 25 years.
The graph below illustrates the trend in global production since 2000, showing that global wine production has remained stable, at around 260 million hectolitres, although with a downward trend in recent years.
