Portugal is proud to offer consumers wines from around 30 Designations of Origin, which represent the largest share of wine exports and are naturally the most highly valued, both on the domestic market and for export. Unlike ordinary wine, wine with a Designation of Origin is subject to a quality certification process, which assesses not only its origin in a particular region but also the grape varieties used, vineyard management processes, winemaking and aging, which characterize the wines of that Designation of Origin and distinguish them from others. The certification of these wines is carried out by a national network of certifying bodies, which are characterized by interprofessional management, i.e., where production and trade in the respective region have a decisive say in strategic choices. The only exceptions are the Douro, Madeira, and Azores regions, where certification processes are carried out by public entities, although with a strong contribution from the two interprofessional entities as well. ANDOVI's activity is focused on representing these entities in their relations with the Portuguese State and the European Union, as well as providing services to its members.
